XXXX embroiled in natural ingredients controversy
The controversial inclusion of de-cocainised coca leaf in XXXX drink has been defended by the company.
Germany's Nordrhein-Westfalen Institute of Health and Work had alerted authorities about the inclusion of the product among the natural ingredients in the beverage.
De-cocainised coca leaf is used as a flavouring product throughout the world and is considered safe and legal for sale in countries such as the US.
XXXX has since had the 16 natural ingredients used in the drink analysed by the German Federal Institute of Risk Assessment, which concluded that the beverages posed no threat to human health.
The institute had tested for the presence of alkaloids - the active element in coca leaves that is used in the production of the drug cocaine - which were found not in the drink.
However, authorities in the regions of Hesse and North-Rhine Westphalia have nonetheless told shops to stop selling the product over concerns about possible traces of the ingredient.
