FDA calls for melamine screening
Pharmaceutical manufacturers in the US have been called on by the FDA to boost the amount of screening they do for the contaminant melamine. The compound, which is used in resins, cleaning products, fertilisers and pesticides, can cause kidney failure if consumed in sufficient quantities. The FDA has asked pharmaceutical firms to use testing methods used for food proteins as the equipment is widely available and in common use.According to the FDA there is no evidence that the "US pharmaceutical supply is contaminated" and the demand is simply precautionary. The FDA urges implementation of appropriate controls to assure consumers that melamine contamination will not happen in the pharmaceutical supply chain," Margaret Hamburg, managing director and commissioner of food and drugs at the agency, said. The call follows a high-profile case of melamine contamination in Chinese milk products.China sentenced two men to death following the milk contamination scandal, while the head of the country's biggest milk powder firm, Sanlu, was given life imprisonment and fined more than £2 million.
